Indian cricket team coach Greg Chappell has been slapped by Biranchi Maharana. at Bhubhaneshwar’s Biju Patnaik Airport today (Jan 22). Orissa police has arrested the man who belongs to Kalinga Sena, a voluntary organisation in Bhubhaneshwar. Apparently Chappell was roughed-up over non-inclusion of players from Orissa.
The most visible among many senas of Orissa is the Bhubaneswar based Kalinga Sena. The activists of Kalinga Sena are well known for holding demonstrations in the state capital on “people-oriented” issues like “non-maintenance of public roads to fee hike in basic services like the telephone. The most recent demonstration by Kalinga Sena activists took place in front of the BJP state headquarters in the RS elections, against the party’s decision to field a leader from outside the state.
The Sena culture in this state can be traced to the Biju Sena which was launched in the early 1990s when Biju Patnaik was chief minister. All kinds of functions were held. For instance, blood donation camps were held on the birthday of Patnaik. This sena played an important role in organising public meetings for Patnaik.
The commonly known senas (Armies) are the Biju Sena, the Nalini Sena, and the Atal Sena. While the Biju Sena was floated by the fans of the late chief minister, Biju Patnaik, the Nalini Sena was formed a couple of years ago by diehard supporters of Nalini Mohanty, former state minister, who is now a Congress MLA after his short stint as president of the Biju Janata Dal. Mohanty was a close associate of Biju Patnaik. The Atal Sena is the brainchild of a group of Orissa-based supporters of the former prime minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee. The latest to jump on to the bandwagon is the Rahul Sena floated by a group of ‘non-political’ supporters of Rahul Gandhi, the new poster boy of the Congress from the household of Gandhis.
