Congress chief and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi's security was put on high alert after home ministry warned the Special Protection Group as well as different state governments about the threat of an attack on her by an Al Qaida-backed terrorist outfit. Vandana Kini, head of VIP security in home ministry, wrote to SPG chief B V Wanchoo and chief secretaries of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan on Wednesday saying that a terror cell led by Sajjad, a Pakistani national who leads the anti-India operations of the United Jehad Council, is aiming to target the Congress leader. The letter states that United Jehad Council was formed by Al Qaida with support from ISI. Said to be a highly-motivated terrorist who has two passports - one Pakistani and another issued by Bangladesh in the name of Ashique - Sajjad has been collaborating with Mohd Salim, head of a Lashkar cell holed up in Meerut. Another member of the group has been identified as Latif Zaman, a Kashmiri youth. Sonia's security was earlier reviewed in the wake of the Malegaon blasts. Intelligence sources, however, said maximum possible security was already in place for the Congress leader. Sonia's security staff has been alerted on the latest threat, he added. The home ministry directive, based on inputs from intelligence agencies, warns that the group would seek to penetrate Sonia's security ring by using forged identity cards. It goes on to warn that while those entrusted with the security of the Congress chief would be required to be on their toes when she goes out to campaign for the UP polls, the terrorists could take a hit at her even in the Capital. "The SPG, Delhi Police and other agencies have been told about the threat, not just during Sonia's election campaigns in UP, but also in the city," a source confirmed.

Al-Qaeda threat to Goa, sifted tourists towards Rajasthan
According to the Israeli Ministry statement, “in the coming weeks travelers to Goa are under serious threat of terror attacks by Al-Qaeda”.

‘’Generally the foreign tourists especially Israelis coming to Varanasi, leave two weeks prior to Christmas for Rajasthan and from there they travel to Goa just before the twin festivities. This time, however, the tourists have either extended their Rajasthan stay till the New Year or have cancelled their ticket from Jaipur to Goa following the Al Qaeda attack threat”, said Anshu, the manager of Shanti Guest House.

“The Israelis along with Indians are the prime targets of Al Qaeda and allied terror outfits and hence we are not going to take chances by travelling to Goa for X-Mas and New Year. May be we can relish the seaside sunshine in Goa early next year”, all three of them staying in Shanti Guest House said.“A X-Mas and New Year on the camel back in Jaiselmer sounds no less exciting than trance parties in Goa”, they added.
